The working world changed forever after March 2020, but for Lennar, it spurred a powerful shift towards corporate wellness beyond the typical program. Early in the pandemic, a Lennar associate named Pete Anderson passed away due to Covid-19 and, in the wake of his death, Lennar knew they needed to face the pandemic head-on and take initiative to support their team’s health and wellness.
As a result, Lennar leaders invited renowned cardiologist and medical researcher Dr. Pascal Goldschmidt, known as Dr. Pascal, to join the team as Chief Medical Officer, where he oversaw vaccination education and records. Soon Dr. Pascal and his team developed a robust health education program, including a campaign called the 5 Pillars of Health, focused on preventative health and wellness through the pandemic and beyond.
Remarkable results from preventative efforts
Over time, the team started to see improvements in associate health and a remarkable outcome – the cost of healthcare for the organization flattened. This validated what the Lennar team had suspected: that education and prevention measures kept people healthy and actually helped financially with healthcare costs.
“This is a principle that I’ve seen repeated over and over. Yes, it’s true that wealth can make you more healthy (such as access to healthcare) but never as much as the degree to which health can make you more wealthy.” – Dr. Pascal
This inspired the next phase of corporate wellness at Lennar. “It became really clear that to maximize two of our five pillars – physical activity and diet – we needed to get more organized,” said Dr. Pascal.
Lennar x ABC Trainerize, a holistic approach to associate wellness
With a distributed team of associates throughout the United States, Lennar knew an app was the way to go, and specifically wanted to provide three elements to their associates and their families, free of charge: fitness programming, nutrition support, and the ability to look back at the data to see progress. ABC Trainerize fit the bill, and LennarFit, a custom-branded ABC Trainerize app, was born.
To keep the team engaged and supported, Lennar jumped into action to certify two of their medical team associates, Daniel Robitaille and Alexander Goldschmidt, as personal trainers and nutrition coaches to build out the programming. When Lennar associates sign up, they’re assigned to one of the two trainers. “We loved the platform so much and chose ABC Trainerize because it allows us to create new things in an endless possibility of what we can do in the future. We want to keep associates’ interest and help them stay fit for a longer period of time,” says Daniel.
Building longevity for Lennar’s distributed associate base
That long term thinking is central to Lennar’s approach to corporate wellness. It’s also central to the LennarFit experience for team members, of proactively increasing health and fitness.
“In a typical fitness app, you’re on your own. But LennarFit is unique where associates have their coaches at their fingertips to communicate and ask questions at any time. If they have a medical issue, they have a doctor there. We’re working together to provide the associates when they have requests or need help,” says Lennar medical team member Maggie Robitaille. The team plans to continue to evolve and iterate on the programming for associates, both to aid ongoing engagement and to minimize any potential drop off in usage – although since launching in January, Lennar has only seen an increase in usage and participation.
Corporate wellness paired with GLP-1 medications
Lennar recently expanded their corporate wellness initiative to include coverage for GLP-1 medications. Dr. Pascal emphasizes the crucial role of the LennarFit app in making these medications effective. “The app is the backbone on which we built the exercise and nutrition platform needed to make the medications effective.” He noted that these medications alone aren’t sufficient for significant health improvements without a solid foundation of exercise and nutrition. “These medications don’t help people who don’t exercise or take their diet seriously. Without the backbone of exercise and nutrition, these medications don’t bring much at all.”
Dr. Pascal referenced recent studies showing that while GLP-1 drugs can help individuals lose around 3% of their body weight, the impact can be as high as 30% with a dedicated focus on fitness and diet. This integration into LennarFit wasn’t initially planned but emerged organically from their comprehensive wellness strategy. Maggie Robitaille, a member of Lennar’s medical team, shared, “We didn’t start LennarFit with the intention of supporting GLP-1 drugs; it happened after the fact.”
Since its launch, LennarFit has seen remarkable engagement, with more than 1000 associates actively using the app and 2000+ app sessions daily. After six months, there has been no decrease in engagement and participation is steadily increasing. “LennarFit is so much more than a fitness app. Some associates love the nutrition aspect. Some love monitoring their calorie intake. Some like the workouts and capturing their walks and swims. LennarFit encompasses all of that, it’s the foundation of what we promote. We promote people to get up and move,” said Robitaille.
Looking ahead, Lennar aims to grow and expand the reach of LennarFit. The organization is interested in extending their wellness programs to trade partners working on construction sites. Dr. Pascal shared, “We very much would like to expand the app to other companies, such as our trade partners, eventually.” Trainers Alexander and Daniel plan to continue building the platform by integrating new features and engagement tactics, ensuring the app evolves to meet the needs of its users and encourages continued usage. LennarFit is a testament to Lennar’s forward-thinking approach to corporate wellness, showcasing a people-first mindset that sets an incredible example to inspire other companies to continue to prioritize their people’s health and well-being.
